Patchwork and quilting are two closely related but distinct techniques which are used together in creating quilts.
- Patchwork: This is the process of piecing together pieces of fabric (often in different colors, shapes, or patterns) to create a larger design. These pieces are sewn together edge-to-edge to form a single layer called a “top.” Patchwork is mostly focused on creating a colorful, visually interesting design by joining fabric pieces.
- Quilting: Once the patchwork top is complete, quilting is the process of stitching together the three layers of a quilt – the patchwork top, a middle layer of batting (or wadding), and a bottom fabric layer. The stitching, called quilting, secures the layers and often adds texture and design to the final piece.
In essence, patchwork is about creating the quilt’s top design, while quilting is about joining all the layers and adding additional visual or textural interest.
